Doug Smith
About Me
Hi, I’m a brand copywriter, UX writer and book ghostwriter for year 3+ startups who want to transform their profile across all channels. The opening paragraph from my CV sums me up well:
Creative yet commercially-minded. A keen eye for both effective content and thoughtful design. A great listener and also a proactive action-taker. A versatile professional with exceptional communication and organisational skills, a diverse background and a knack for fostering strong relationships. Good at grasping new concepts quickly and conveying complex ideas in simple terms. Always looking for the real story or motivations behind actions. Loves getting people to react – be that to sign up, buy, share, find out more, laugh out loud or even recoil in horror.
In short, I’m an experienced copywriter from a creative background with 8-9 years in marketing and writing focused on users.
In my time, both freelance and in-house at an agency, I have:
– Delivered high-quality copy for websites, emails, landing pages, brochures and ads
– Conducted interviews to produce articles, case studies, profile pieces and award entries
– Created tone of voice docs, brand manifestos, blog articles and direct marketing materials
– Drafted detailed briefs for other writers and reviewed their work
– Been part of teams that created results like: 127% increase in annual website visits; 4X more job applications; 35X more online enquiries; 86.9% increase in website sessions; 100% increase in website conversions; an average rank increase of 5 positions, and an industry award win.
– Worked with two variants of the WordPress CMS to input and structure content
– Run ads in Meta and Amazon
– Wrote (and narrated!) video scripts
– Run discovery sessions and workshops to define brand voice, values, market and goals
– Worked with B2B & BTC brands, tech startups, charities, solopreneurs and creative agencies
Sectors: residential property & development, recruitment, wealth management, accountancy, medical marketing, fibre broadband, freight logistics, personal development, education, subsea scanning, retail software, marketing agencies, event production, council communications, mortgages, financial advice, yoga, tech, destination marketing, HR and more.
I’m also an author, with an innate love of language, storytelling and reaching readers through the publishing and promotion process.
Nobody’s sent round any grumpy-looking guys with cricket bats yet. In fact, usually it goes down pretty well:
“I can highly recommend Doug. He understood our brief and created great content which aligned with our brand. He’s also a nice chap to work with!” – Alina Jenkins, BodyTalk, UK

I’ve always enjoyed great relationships with colleagues, and have collaborated with designers, SEOs, account managers and clients themselves in the course of my work.
While I’m freelance right now, I’d welcome being part of a wider team again, where we can exchange ideas, share wins and make a difference together! (And maybe build strange pots on company away days?)
I would love to hear more about your work and your priorities right now.
